When Mike King, founder of I Am Hope and Gumboot Friday, he became the first person to wear our Hope Is My Homeboy apparel, it felt like a deeply meaningful beginning for our cause. Mike’s dedication to mental health and suicide prevention aligns with our own journey and mission. As the co-founder, my (Rutu’s) connection to this mission is personal and profound. Having lost my father at age 10 and my brother at age 18 to suicide, I know all too well the importance of creating spaces that encourage healing and bring hope to those who need it most.
A Mission Rooted in Tragedy
In 2012, after the loss of my brother, Hope Is My Homeboy was born. My mum and sister helped start this journey as a tribute to his life and as a message of resilience for others. His best friend Mel, an incredible illustrator, brought his memory to life through beautiful designs that were vibrant and full of meaning. These designs represented hope, strength, and the unwavering love we have for those we’ve lost.
Despite the early support, grief took its toll on us. Within six months of launch, we had to step back. As a family, we needed time to heal, to sit with our loss, and to find our way forward together. And so, hope is my homeboy went silent. But the vision never left; it simply waited until we were ready to bring it back with the love and dedication it deserved.
Bringing Hope to Life
Now, a decade later, I’ve poured hundreds of hours into rekindling this project, ensuring every detail—from high-quality materials to the careful vinyl selection—is chosen with care. Each item is crafted to offer not just style but comfort and connection. This is more than clothing; it’s a message, a reminder that hope is something we can hold onto, and that we’re never alone in our struggles.
Thank You, Mike, for Believing in Us
Mike King’s early support wasn’t just an endorsement; it was a symbol of solidarity. Seeing him wear our hoodie for the first time reminded us of the impact we could have together. We’re honoured to continue this journey with his inspiration, knowing that each piece we create carries forward a message of hope, healing, and connection.
Our Invitation to You
Today, hope is my homeboy stands stronger, with a renewed purpose to make a difference. To everyone who wears our designs, we’re grateful for your support in spreading this message. Whether you’re wearing it for yourself or in memory of someone else, you’re part of a movement that honours life, supports healing, and keeps hope alive.
Thank you for being here with us. Together, we’re creating something beautiful—something that reminds us all that there’s always hope, and there’s always a way forward.
