A Powerful Partnership
In a tremendous show of support and unity, Hope Is My Homeboy has partnered with 13 football clubs across the Nelson region to prioritise mental health and well-being within the sports community. Through these partnerships, our kaupapa (core values) and message of hope are proudly displayed on the clubs’ kits, a visible reminder of each club’s commitment to mental health awareness. This collaboration is more than just a sponsorship—it’s a collective effort to bring real change to the way mental health is approached in sports.
Building a Supportive Culture
By wearing hope is my homeboy on their uniforms, these clubs signal to players, coaches, and fans alike that mental health is a priority. This is not only an empowering message for players but also a conversation starter, encouraging individuals to support each other and reach out if they need help. Since the partnership began, club presidents have reported a noticeable shift in the atmosphere. Players feel more encouraged to come forward about their struggles, knowing they are part of a team and a community that values their well-being.
Changing the Game for Club Leaders
The impact of this initiative extends beyond players. Presidents and club leaders, who often find themselves caught up in routine club politics or competitive banter, now have a unified focus on a cause that transcends rivalries. This shift has brought a sense of purpose and solidarity among clubs, reminding everyone that no matter the jersey or the score, supporting each other matters most.
A Model for Sports Everywhere
The success of this partnership in Nelson sets an inspiring example for sports clubs nationwide. By placing mental health at the heart of our communities, we’re building a culture that cares for the whole person—on and off the field. Football, and sport in general, holds the power to bring people together, break down stigma, and make support accessible to everyone involved.
Looking Ahead
Together with these clubs, we’re creating a community that stands for kindness, strength, and resilience. To sports enthusiasts, families, players, and club leaders across New Zealand: imagine what we could achieve if mental health was a focus for every team. As hope is my homeboy, we invite others to join us in making a difference—one match, one conversation, and one check-in at a time.
